The Launch of the First 11 Black Lionesses Exhibition

Following the success of our recent exhibitions, our ‘First 11 Black Players’ heritage project turns its focus to the women’s game. We are incredibly proud to announce the launch of a new exhibition celebrating the Lionesses’ First 11 Black Players at Arsenal FC. From the pioneers who paved the way to the modern icons inspiring a generation, this powerful collection honours their legacy in football and within the black community.

Following on from the impactful unveilings with Sunderland AFC and Middlesbrough FC, our anti-racism campaign continues to make history. Today, we shift the spotlight to the England Women’s national team, unveiling an exhibition dedicated to the first eleven Black footballers to represent the Lionesses. This exhibition not only celebrates their immense contributions to football but also explores how their journeys have shaped the story of diversity and inclusion within the women’s sport.

This landmark exhibition features 11 stunning banners, each dedicated to a pioneering player. They showcase their pivotal moments in an England shirt, their contributions to the growth of the game, and pay deep respect to their cultural heritage and the barriers they broke.

From the first Black player to ever don the Lionesses crest to the superstars of today who stand on their shoulders, this exhibition provides a long-overdue look at the figures who have fundamentally enriched English football.

This vital project would not be possible without the continued support and sponsorship of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) and The Football Association (The FA). Thanks also to Getty Images for helping to source and supply images of the players.

A special thank you is extended to the researchers and historians, including Richard Flash, whose dedication ensured these crucial stories were brought to light. Finally, our sincere gratitude to the FA, PFA and everyone involved with the Lionesses for their collaboration and commitment to sharing this essential part of their history.
