#SRtRCSpotlight: The Next Generation of ‘Leaders of Now’ Get to Work in Wales

On Tuesday 24th September, SRtRC Wales launched ‘Leaders of Now’ 2024-25 with a brand-new cohort of eager anti-racism ambassadors from across Flintshire and Wrexham thanks to funding from Flintshire Healthy Schools team, Wrexham Healthy Schools team and the Community Cohesion Northeast Wales team.

The event, which took place at Xplore! Science Discovery Centre in Wrexham saw 35 pupils and teachers build their knowledge and understanding around racism and anti-racism and begin to plan how to move their schools forward. ‘Leaders of Now’ 23-24 ambassadors from Hawarden High School, Flintshire, and their teacher, Sarah Williams, came to share their work and provide inspiration for this year’s cohort. They valued SRtRC support and said: ‘Through the visits we received from April, we were able to talk through our ideas presenting them from the early stages meaning we are able to workshop what would work and what wouldn’t. April also helped keep our ideas realistic and as an overall group helped keep us grounded.’

One pupil said:

‘We enjoyed the day at Explore with Show Racism the Red Card and are looking forward to starting our group at school, seeing the school from last year discuss their project was inspirational.’

Now the hard work begins as pupils return to their schools to set up their anti-racism groups, take a stance with activities such as Wear Red Day on October 18th Wear Red Day – Show Racism the Red Card and the SRtRC Schools Competition School Competition – Show Racism the Red Card, carry out research, and plan actions accordingly, all whilst developing their confidence and competence in embedding anti-racism.

Of course, Show Racism the Red Card will be alongside them all the way with regular school check ins but we wish them all the best as they embark on this exciting journey.

Don’t forget to check back in on the website later in the year and follow us on social media @theredcardwales to see how our brand-new ambassadors are getting on!
