#SRtRCSpotlight: SRtRC Scotland Supports UNISON Equality Seminar

Show Racism the Red Card Scotland (SRtRC Scotland) was proud to contribute to UNISON’s annual Equality Seminar in Glasgow, where equality representatives from across the Utilities Sector came together to explore some of the key challenges facing workplaces and communities today.

The afternoon session focused on understanding and countering the rise of the populist political right and the far right, examining its impact on equality, anti-racism, and race discrimination, while highlighting practical ways that trade unions and community organisations can work together to challenge hate.

Billy Singh, Campaign Manager for Show Racism the Red Card Scotland, delivered a presentation that covered:

  • A brief overview of the work of Show Racism the Red Card Scotland and its ongoing commitment to tackling racism through education.
  • The UNISON/SRtRC Training Programme – Challenging the Rise of the Populist Right, showcasing how the partnership equips trade union members with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and challenge harmful narratives.
  • Having Those Difficult Conversations, providing practical examples and strategies to help participants engage confidently with colleagues, members and communities when discussing racism, discrimination and misinformation.

The session was opened by Clare Williams, Regional Secretary for UNISON’s Northern Region, who welcomed delegates before introducing Billy Singh.

Delegates responded extremely positively to the workshop, with many highlighting it as one of the standout sessions of the weekend in their evaluation forms. The enthusiastic feedback reflected the importance of providing practical tools, education and partnership working to help tackle racism and build more inclusive workplaces.

The event also reinforced the value of the continuing partnership between UNISON and Show Racism the Red Card, demonstrating how trade unions and anti-racism organisations can work together to empower representatives with the skills and confidence to challenge prejudice, counter divisive narratives and promote equality both in the workplace and within local communities.

As conversations around equality continue to evolve, Show Racism the Red Card remains committed to supporting organisations across the UK through education, training and collaborative initiatives that help create a fairer, more inclusive society for everyone.
