#SRtRCSpotlight: SRtRC & Barnsley College Empowering Students to Challenge Racism

Our North West Education team have been paying regular visits to South Yorkshire this year, working with Barnsley College to deliver several days of workshops to students from a range of different departments.

Young people studying a range of courses including Childcare and Education, Travel and Tourism, Engineering, Construction, Animal Care, Horticulture, Health, Science and Social Care, and Learning for Living and Work participated in training around the college’s different locations – even on a working farm! In addition, a recorded version of our programme was created so that those working on apprenticeships could also access the training, meaning over 500 people participated in our sessions.

Workshops took place on themes such as Unconscious Bias, Stereotyping, Migration, Identifying Racism and Allyship, while participants also looked at different ways in which they could support people targeted by racism, report incidents and challenge appropriately.

As always, there were surprises and challenges for all involved, our educators included, as conversations often took diversions, and allowed the opportunity for difficult topics and discussions to be addressed.

We hope our legacy will be that these difficult conversations continue, with the students taking their anti-racism journeys into their future careers, helping to spread our message further.

Lucy Evans, Cultural Capital & Personal Development Coordinator at Barnsley College, and part of their Student Services team said,

“It has been an incredible experience working with Show Racism the Red Card over the past few months to empower students with the knowledge and confidence to challenge racism, stand as allies, and champion equality here in Barnsley. A massive thank you to Andy and Hannah for working with us, and a special shout-out to Hannah for creating bespoke recorded sessions, which have enabled us to extend this learning across the wider college community and to our apprenticeships, ensuring we reach and inspire even more students.”
