#SRtRCSpotlight: Springwood Primary School Pupils Shine as Changemakers in ‘Leaders of Now’ Anti-Racism Project
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) and Springwood Primary School in Cardiff is proudly celebrating the incredible achievements of its young pupils, who have taken a bold stand against racism as part of the Leaders of Now: Primary programme throughout the summer term.
Over the past 10 weeks, a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils have stepped into leadership roles as anti-racism ambassadors, championing a powerful message of equality, inclusion, and change across their school community.
The project kicked off with impactful half-day educational workshops that laid the foundation for honest conversations and meaningful learning. From there, the pupil ambassadors took the lead, developing their own mission statement, auditing school resources, creating awareness campaigns, and conducting peer-led research to understand how racism shows up and how it can be challenged within their school and wider community.
These “Leaders of Now” didn’t just talk about racism; they took real action, gathering data, sparking dialogue, and creating an ambitious, pupil-driven action plan aimed at making Springwood Primary an even safer, more inclusive space for all no matter their background.
The project concluded with a powerful celebration event, where the ambassadors confidently presented their findings, ideas, and achievements to the school community. Their voices, passion, and determination moved staff, peers, and visitors alike, proving that becoming anti-racist has no age limit.
Dean Pymble, Campaign Manager for Wales at SRtRC, praised the young ambassadors:
“Through Leaders of Now, we’re empowering pupils to speak up, challenge prejudice, and create positive change in their schools and communities. The energy, honesty, and commitment shown by Springwood’s students were incredible; they truly are the leaders of now, not just the future.
A huge thank you to the staff at Springwood Primary for welcoming us so warmly and for your ongoing commitment to making your school an inclusive and safe space for everyone.
Well done to all the young leaders, keep using your voices and standing up for what’s right!”

The Leaders of Now: Primary programme is a powerful catalyst for change, deeply aligned with the Curriculum for Wales and Estyn’s inspection guidance. It equips schools to raise a generation of ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world, more confident young people who are not only ready to shape and create a more inclusive Wales but have a major role to play in the Welsh government’s drive to be an anti-racist nation by 2030.
Emma Turner, Headteacher at Springwood Primary, said:
“I am incredibly grateful to Show Racism the Red Card, and in particular to Roxanne, for the vital role they have played in empowering our pupils through the Leaders of Now project. This work has given our children a strong and meaningful voice—enabling them not only to speak out against racism, but to lead the way in creating a more inclusive and compassionate school community.
Roxanne’s support has inspired our young people to see themselves as changemakers, and their confidence as leaders has grown with every step. Thank you for helping them realise the power they have to make a difference.”
Springwood Primary has proven that when young people are given the tools and trust to lead, they rise. Their voices have sparked a ripple of change that will continue to grow, and the message is clear every pupil has the power to make a difference.
