#SRtRCSpotlight: New anti-racism partnership with SSLEP
On December 2nd, our NW team delivered a day of teacher training to senior leaders and other school staff as the launch of a new project with Sheffield South East Learning Partnership (SSELP).
During the spring term, eleven primary schools will receive half day workshops for students in Year 5 and Year 6. At the end of the programme, there will be another round of teacher training, which will enable staff to evaluate the impact of the sessions in school, and to plan next steps in their own anti-racism projects.
The initial workshop at the Manor Discovery Centre was attended by 20 staff from SSELP schools, who enthusiastically explored a range of issues to develop their understanding of what racism looks like in their education settings and in wider society.
Areas of focus were:
- Definitions of race / racism / unconscious bias
- What does racism look like in 2024/25 and in our schools?
- Everyday racism and microaggressions
- Language and terminology
- Privilege and allyship
- Challenging racism
- Teaching and learning
- Policy and leadership
- Next steps
Comments on what attendees enjoyed about the training included:
“The confidence with which colleagues could share their thoughts and opinions safely”, “Having time to reflect”, “It was relaxed and comfortable”, “Easy to follow and informative”, “Practical activities”, “The level of discussion and the open conversation” &“Lots of opportunities to reflect and share ideas/scenarios”
In the student workshops, pupils will learn about: stereotypes and where they come from; what racism looks like and what impact it can have; the importance of allyship; and creating an anti-racism toolkit. Finally, they will be asked to take part in our SRtRC Changemakers Challenge, asking themselves what they can do to help make their schools anti-racist.
SSELP is a partnership that enables schools to collaborate at all levels, whatever their status or background, for the benefit of the pupils and the local community.
Enhancing the life- chances of every child in the partnership has been its aim since the 1990s and SSELP has demonstrated that so much more can be offered and achieved by working collaboratively and by being ambitious and innovative.
Close working, based on mutual trust, is truly embedded through SSELP’s priorities and the sharing of good practice. SSELP has a high profile within the city and beyond, works with national organisations and leading educational figures and has been recognised with national awards.
We hope that our new partnership with them will have a great impact on the communities and schools it serves.
