#SRtRCSpotlight: Leeds Beckett University ITE trainees share their outcomes!
Throughout the 24/25 academic year, trainee teachers from Leeds Beckett University worked with education workers from the SRtRC North-East team to examine the role of racism within educational settings. Drawing on a wide range of academic literature around race theory and scenario-based learning, trainees examined the historical development of racism, and its relationship to contemporaneous educational experiences and barriers facing ethnically diverse global majority communities.
Using ongoing reflective practice, the trainees examined how and why they need to develop their own anti-racist pedagogy, and on their understanding/misunderstanding of how racism works, so that they could begin to address misconceptions around racism within their own emerging teaching practice and pedagogy. They also considered their unique placement settings, particularly their roles and responsibilities when recognising and reporting racist incidents, so that they could meet sector-wide statutory duties and professional teaching standards.

Feedback from both staff and trainees was consistently and overwhelmingly positive throughout the delivery of the taught sessions, with trainees highlighting the relevancy of the course to their studies:
“Super interactive and based on our current course!”
“I learn really well from examples so looks at different scenarios and how a situation is dealt with helps me reflect really deeply”
“I found the open discussions really raw and honest and eye opening…it was excellent”
“Learning about examples of history and disparities in education”
“Learning about biases and how it can affect perceptions of others”
“Understanding how to be aware and spread awareness of racism in schools”
At the end of the training course, trainees enjoyed showing off their creative skills during a practical ‘resource day’. Working with peers, they created and presented anti-racism classroom resources based on a topic that had been explored during the course. As a culmination of their individual and shared learning, we think they did an amazing job! We’re sure that you will agree. Well done Leeds Beckett ITE trainees!
