#SRtRCSpotlight: Interfaith Community Iftars in Wales

In February 2026, Show Racism the Red Card proudly hosted two powerful Interfaith Community Iftar celebrations, bringing together communities across South Wales in partnership with professional sport.

The first event took place at Cardiff City Stadium, delivered in collaboration with Cardiff City FC and Cardiff City FC Community Foundation. The evening welcomed people of all faiths and backgrounds to share food, conversation and reflection during the holy month of Ramadan. Players, community leaders, supporters and local families gathered to break the fast together, reinforcing the message that football has the power to unite beyond difference.

The second celebration took place at Rodney Parade, in partnership with Newport County AFC, County in the Community, and Dragons RFC. The event highlighted the strength of cross-sport collaboration, with football and rugby standing side by side to promote inclusion, challenge prejudice and celebrate the diversity of Welsh communities.

Across both evenings, speakers shared reflections on faith, identity and belonging, while young people engaged in open discussions about tackling Islamophobia, and all forms of racism. These Iftars were not only about breaking the fast, they were about breaking down barriers.

Interfaith engagement remains a growing and vital part of Show Racism the Red Card’s work across Wales. Through educational workshops in schools, training for staff in workplaces, and partnership activity with professional clubs, the organisation continues to use the influence of sport to challenge discrimination and promote equity. The Iftar programme exemplifies this approach: creating safe spaces for dialogue, building understanding between communities, and demonstrating visible solidarity. Our partners and funders COSARAF Charitable Foundation, Unite the Union, FAW, Admiral, Gwent Police were essential in supporting our vision and be able to deliver these impactful events for attendees to come together.

The momentum continues in the coming weeks with further Interfaith Iftar events planned at the Senedd and the Swansea.com Stadium, extending the message from stadiums into civic and regional spaces. These gatherings will once again bring together faith leaders, community groups, athletes and policymakers to reinforce a shared commitment to inclusion.

At a time when division can dominate headlines, these events demonstrate what is possible when communities come together with purpose. Through partnership, education and the unifying power of sport, Show Racism the Red Card remains committed to building a Wales where everyone belongs.

Dean Pymble, Campaign Manager for Wales at Show Racism the Red Card, said:

“Our Interfaith Iftar events are about far more than sharing a meal — they are about creating meaningful spaces where people from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds can come together with mutual respect and understanding. Working alongside professional clubs and community foundations across Wales shows the positive influence sport can have in tackling racism and building stronger, more connected communities.

At a time when division can feel amplified, these evenings send a clear message: inclusion is not optional, it is essential. We are proud to stand with our partners in demonstrating that Wales is a nation where diversity is celebrated and everyone has a place.”

Feedback from attendee of the Cardiff City FC event included:

“The event was a great opportunity for people across multi faiths to come and share Iftar with the community. It was lovely to see everyone from different backgrounds come together to eat and pray, all while raising awareness about kicking out racism from all institutions. Great venue, great atmosphere.”
