#SRtRCSpotlight: Inspiring the Next Generation at Southend United’s Roots Hall Stadium

A Day of Learning and Inspiration

Sixty Year 6 pupils from a local primary school participated in a day-long workshop, designed to educate young minds on anti-racism, challenging stereotypes and fostering allyship.

The event kicked off with SRtRC’s Fans of the Future workshop, an interactive session that delved into critical topics such as understanding terminology, recognizing and addressing hate crime, and the role of allyship in creating inclusive environments. Pupils engaged in discussions and participated in activities that encouraged them to challenge stereotypes and think critically about the impact of racism.

Regional Manager for SRtRC, Paul Hill, said:

“It’s always inspiring to see the enthusiasm and openness of young people when tackling these challenging topics. By creating safe spaces for these conversations, we can empower them to be active participants in promoting equality and respect in their communities.”

Following the workshop, pupils were treated to an all-access stadium tour, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at Roots Hall Stadium. For many, this was their first-ever visit to a football stadium, a moment that made a lasting impression.

In the afternoon, the pupils had the unique opportunity to engage with a panel featuring former Southend United players and coaches. The Q&A session provided a platform for the young audience to ask meaningful questions about the panellists’ lived experiences, the challenges of addressing racism in professional sports and advice on how to be effective allies.

Ex-Southend United player John White reflected on the significance of the session:

“It was brilliant to be invited to be on the panel for a Q&A for such a relevant topic that can often be difficult to discuss.

The first question left me momentarily speechless with the thought and care behind the question and allowed me to pass on both positive and negative experiences which I faced during my career. It was brilliant to give back to the younger generation and explain everyone goes through tough times but being part of a team is so important both on and off the pitch!”

The event highlighted the power of collaboration in creating impactful learning experiences. Dan King, Operations Manager at Southend United Community Foundation, praised the event’s success:

“Another fantastic event hosted at Roots Hall Stadium, delivered by Paul at SRtRC! It’s brilliant to see so many young people being educated about racism and the negative effect it can have on so many people. All the pupils and teachers were so engaged throughout and all left the stadium full of knowledge but also smiles of their faces from an excellent day out at a football stadium.

My first question to the 60 pupils was, how many of you have visited a football stadium before, and only 6 people put their hands up. That showed to me just having the young people in the stadium was a huge success and extremely positive!

Thanks again Paul for another fantastic event.”

By combining education and football, the event created a powerful platform for challenging racism and fostering a more inclusive future. Pupils left Roots Hall Stadium not only with valuable knowledge but also with a sense of empowerment to make a difference not only in their classroom’s but also in their communities.

A huge thanks to John White, Dan King and the team at Southend United Community Foundation for hosting a brilliant event that will inspire the next generation to stand against racism and embrace equality!
