#SRtRCSpotlight: Inspiring Anti-Racism and Inclusivity with Portsmouth FC & Arsenal FC
This past week, the South Region hosted two incredible anti-racism educational events at Portsmouth Football Club at Fratton Park and Arsenal FC at The Emirates, with the goal of inspiring young students to embrace unity, respect, and inclusivity.
These events reached over 250 students in total, marking another impactful chapter in our ongoing mission to challenge racism and build a more inclusive future.

The week began with an event at Portsmouth Football Club, where 200 young pupils gathered for an interactive workshop on the power of diversity and the importance of understanding different cultures.
Activities included group discussions, personal stories, and thought-provoking exercises in challenging stereotypes.
These activities were designed to help students identify and stand up against racial biases in everyday life. Through engaging conversations, they learned about the impact of racism, the importance of empathy and ways to champion inclusivity within their communities.

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring Portsmouth Women’s First Team players Megan Hornby, Annie Hutchings, and Scarlett Williams.
The players shared their personal experiences, discussing the importance of representation in sport and how the game can inspire unity across all backgrounds.
Students were able to ask questions directly, sparking an honest and inspiring dialogue about how sports can be a platform for change.

The week culminated with a second event at Arsenal Football Club, attended by 60 Year 5 pupils. Arsenal legends Paul Davis and Perry Groves joined us for this special event, bringing both inspiration and personal insights into how football has the power to unite people from all backgrounds.
Both Paul and Perry shared stories from their careers, discussing the obstacles they faced as professional athletes and the significance of solidarity on and off the pitch.

Paul Hill, South Regional Manager, reflected on the success of the events:
“Seeing the students’ enthusiasm and engagement reminds us why this work is so important. Each young person here represents hope for a better, more inclusive future. By working with them on our anti racism programme in iconic settings, we’re helping them understand that they can make a difference.
These events were a testament to the power of education, role models, and the enduring spirit of young people determined to make a difference. By combining the influence of legendary football clubs and players with impactful sessions and hands-on learning, we’re laying the foundation for a more understanding and inclusive generation.”
Teachers were equally moved by the event’s impact. Ms. Roberts, a Year 5 teacher, noted,
“This experience was unforgettable for our pupils. Learning about racism through real-life stories and seeing role models like Paul Davis and Perry Groves speak out against it was eye-opening for them. It brought the subject to life and helped them see how they, too, can contribute to change.”
The students left with new perspectives and the confidence to champion anti-racism in their schools and communities.
Here are a few of their reflections:
- “Hearing Paul Davis speak about the struggles he faced made me realize that racism is real, and I want to help stop it,” shared Emily, age 10.
- “I loved learning about how football can bring people together. I want to be someone who treats everyone fairly,” said Jacob, age 11.
- “Today I learned that even small actions, like standing up for a friend, can help fight racism,” reflected Amina, age 10.

Jack Cunningham, educator at SRtRC added,
“It was an incredible two days with Pompey in the Community at Fratton Park and with Arsenal in the Community at The Emirates.
The clubs, and their partner schools, were superb at promoting anti-racism throughout their communities. Students learned to recognize and safely challenge racism, spoke to some amazing panellists and even created some amazing posters to put up in their schools.
A massive thanks to everyone who supported us and made this event happen!”
Thank you to Pompey in the Community and Arsenal in the Community who made these events possible.
Together, we’re taking powerful steps toward a future where everyone feels valued, respected, and seen!
