#SRtRCSpotlight: ‘Game Changers for Equality’ – Promoting Equality and Anti-Racism in Your School Community
This week, our Southern team have been busy doing what they do best – spreading anti-racism education across schools and businesses far and near. The highlight of this week has been the staff training their educators delivered.
Following some pupil workshops, two educators from our Southern team, Gracie and Paul Roberts, delivered a two-hour teacher training session at Hextable Primary School in Kent to a total of 60 school staff. The topic was racism and how to tackle it in schools.
The delegates were given tools on how to deal with racist incidents among both students and staff, following discussions around the concepts of discrimination, racism and micro-aggressions, racist language and unconscious bias.
The staff were very engaged and asked some very important questions which led to some great discussions, enabling them to also learn from each other and empowering them to continue these conversations after the workshop.
Following the workshop, one of the teachers had the following to say:
“We are very grateful to Show Racism the Red Card and to Paul and Gracie for delivering anti-racism training to our staff today. They provided some very useful tools for us to handle racist incidents within the school.
It helped us to be able to identify what our next steps should be as a school so that we can continue to work hard to fulfil our values.
Both of the trainers were not only very knowledgeable but were able to speak about this challenging topic with patience and grace. We would absolutely recommend this training to other schools.”
Mrs Hammond, Deputy Headteacher and SENCo, reflects on the training and shares:
“Thank you so much for the insightful and thought-provoking training last week. We are passionate about promoting anti-racism in our school and the training encouraged us to challenge our own views and identify the barriers in our own practice!”
The school’s strong commitment to anti-racism deeply influences our training, ensuring that key lessons are carried forward into how teachers promote equality in the classroom. These principles can also be applied beyond school settings, enriching daily life.
“The staff training led by Paul and Gracie was brilliant at educating us all on our own unconscious bias and made us think about how we can improve the way we interact and educate our children.
It put a lot of things into perspective, such as facts and figures surrounding racism and the effect on adults and children. It was a real eye opener and something that every staff member benefitted from.”
