#SRtRCSpotlight: Fans of the Future at Shears Green Junior School

This week, the Southern Team delivered whole-school approach workshops, at Shears Green Junior School in Gravesend, Kent.

Regional Manager, Paul Hill and Education Worker, Jack Cunningham delivered Anti-Racism workshops to Shear Green Junior’s, Years 4, 5 and 6, in addition to facilitating staff-training for the teachers.

KS2 pupils received our Anti-Racism workshop, Fans of the Future, where they learned the importance of recognising, challenging and reporting racism. Through examination of what racism is, stereotypes and language, the students learned how to become ‘Active Citizens’ and how to safely call-out negative behaviours and actions.

Educator Jack Cunningham, who led the sessions said;

“It was quite the full-on day, with lots of information being given to pupils, who handled difficult subject matters in a mature, thoughtful and productive manner. Both pupils and teachers have said this is just the start, as they plan to continue their conversations and learning, which is fantastic to hear!”

Shears Green staff then engaged positively in our Teacher Training workshop and discussed the importance of challenging racism both amongst their students and with their colleagues. Conversations on bias, intersectionality and privilege encouraged staff to examine our own biases and provided support when challenging ourselves and others. SRtRC’s facilitators encouraged personal and collective reflection and shared guidance and recommendations regarding internal policymaking and reports processes.

Shears Green had the following to say:

“Our recent Anti-Racism workshop was an incredibly enriching experience for both staff and children. The day was filled with meaningful conversations, eye-opening activities, and powerful learning moments that helped deepen our understanding of inclusivity and respect. We all came away with a stronger sense of empathy, awareness, and commitment to continuing to foster a more equitable environment. It was a truly transformative day that will continue to shape our community in positive ways.”

Regional Manager, Paul Hill said of the day:

“The anti-racism workshops delivered to Years 4, 5 and 6 at Shear Green Juniors were a real success, with pupils showing a strong commitment to understanding racism, challenging stereotypes, and celebrating diversity. The children engaged openly and thoughtfully, demonstrating their commitment to be active allies in promoting respect and inclusion. The teacher-training session further strengthened this work, as teachers explored practical ways to embed anti-racist practice across the school. By prioritising this learning, Shear Green Juniors are taking real leadership in their community equipping both pupils and staff to stand up against racism and create a more equal and inclusive environment for all.”

Overall, it was a wonderful day delivering at Shears Green Junior School in Gravesend, and the engagement from pupils, staff and the support given to our staff, was very much appreciated by our facilitators.
