#SRtRCSpotlight: Challenging Narratives with USDAW Black Members Network
This week, our spotlight takes us to the south of England, where Leon Braithwaite from the Southern team was invited as a guest speaker at the USDAW Eastern Conference on 24 June 2026.
Leon shared the story of how Show Racism the Red Card came to fruition, including the powerful example of Shaka Hislop, and explored the topics of learnt behaviour and systemic conditioning. He also reflected on the current political climate and the challenges surrounding identity.
Throughout his talk, Leon emphasised the importance of working together to change long-standing narratives, and of being a positive voice grounded in factual information.

The response spoke for itself. April Harris, USDAW Area Organiser, said:
“Leon was a fantastic addition to our Black Members Get-together and his session was extremely well received by those in attendance. His talk was inspiring because he shared his own experiences in an honest and authentic way, which really resonated with delegates. His ability to engage the whole room and encourage participation created an interactive and inclusive atmosphere throughout the session.
Some feedback from the event was that delegates found Leon’s story relatable, motivating and empowering. Many appreciated hearing about his personal journey and the barriers he had overcome, as well as his message about finding your voice and stepping into leadership opportunities with confidence.”

We’re proud to see Leon’s work making an impact far beyond our team.
