#SRtRCSpotlight: Bespoke anti-racism training with ANGUSalive

This week we are shining the spotlight on our team in Scotland. Our dedicated educators go up and down the country delivering high quality anti-racism workshops. This week, we are focusing on their bespoke workshop with ANGUSalive.

The workshop was developed to coincide with the launch of the “World Cultures Collection”, exploring the heritage sector as an historically exclusionary space that was built by and for elites on the back of Transatlantic Slavery and European Imperialism. Over time, our museums and other heritage spaces have changed and opened up access to the wider population, however, many of their collections remain full of looted material and still remain exclusionary to a variety of marginalised communities.

The workshop created space for facilitated conversation with ANGUSAalive public facing museum staff to consider the heritage sector’s colonial history and its potential role in challenging racist narratives in our society.

“A huge thank you to JT from Show Racism the Red Card Scotland for his informative and thought-provoking Workshop with our Museums Team at Signal Tower Museum this morning.

The session provided us with an opportunity to think about and discuss bias, prejudice and racism ahead of our upcoming ‘Perspectives: Collecting the World’ exhibition at Montrose Museum. This work touches on topics such as identity and representation within museum spaces, legacies of slavery and empire in Scotland, and the repatriation of objects. These topics can prove contentious and provoke a range of strongly held points of view.

The objects in the upcoming exhibition not only unlock stories of Angus people who travelled all over the world but also the impact they had on the people, cultures and ways of life they encountered as they did so.”

The charity ANGUSalive is the culture, sport and leisure trust for the county of Angus and has been operating since December 2015. ANGUSalive offers residents and visitors to Angus a wealth of services which inspire healthy, active and creative lifestyle choices through the use of our sports centres, country parks, theatres and venues, museums, galleries, archives and libraries.
