This week, Show Racism the Red Card Scotland successfully delivered a series of impactful racial literacy workshops to Basketball Scotland’s National Academy players, equipping young athletes with the tools to recognise, confront and prevent racism both on and off the court.
Funded by The Bill McLaren Foundation, the sessions engaged Girls’ and Boys’ U15 and U17 squads, fostering dialogue on overt and subtle forms of racism while shaping positive team cultures.
The workshops explored core racial literacy concepts, from systemic discrimination to everyday microaggressions, using sport as a lens to promote allyship. Players examined case studies of inclusive and harmful team dynamics, sparking reflections on their roles as leaders in driving change.
“The Show Racism the Red Card workshop offer the players more than just an educational experience; it’s an opportunity for them to become champions of change. By understanding the impact of racism, they learn the power of understanding and inclusion, which are essential skills both on and off the court”
-Darryl Wood, Men’s National Academy Head Coach
“The Show Racism the Red Card workshop highlighted that racism is not only big gestures or comments, but also small things that easily get dismissed and not spoken about.”
– Emma Harbisher, U15 National Academy Player
Thanks to collaborations like this, we’re able to amplify the importance of anti-racism. Sport has the power to break down barriers, and with these sessions, we aimed to equip the young athletes to lead by example—on their teams, in their communities and as future role models.
