#SRtRCSpotlight: Anti-Racist Captains – Remembering Srebrenica Memorial Event
In July, our North West team launched its Community Foundation for Merseyside-funded Anti-Racist Captains project at Tranmere Rovers FC, incorporating a Remembering Srebrenica memorial event in partnership with Wirral secondary schools and Wirral Deen Centre.
The Captains programme will see students from 4 schools participate in sessions during the summer holidays, followed by workshops in each schools in the autumn term. Further events will take place in spring 2027, when the festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr, Easter and Holi all take place.
Young people attending the event at Prenton Park were inspired not only by their introduction to anti-racism, but also by Srebrenica-themed presentations and speeches from Councillor Mary Jordan (Mayor of Wirral), Steve Baker (CEO of The People’s Academy Trust), Neil Sledge (Wirral NEU and Remembering Srebrenica co-chair), Nik Perring (writer and poet) and Mohammed Haque (Wirral Deen Centre). During lunchtime, there was an opportunity for students to play football together, commemorating events from the Bosnian genocide through togetherness, while poetry and artwork were also shared.
During the same week, SRtRC staff participated in Wirral’s annual Remembering Srebrenica “We Are One” commemorative football event at Shaftesbury Youth Club in Birkenhead, bringing together people of all ages to remember the events of July 11th 1995, and to celebrate unity through sport.
