#SRtRCSpotlight: Anti-Racism with Salford Healthy Schools programme
Following a series of anti-racism workshops in Broadoak Primary School between 2022 and 2025, SRtRC introduced an Anti-Racist Captains programme, funded by Salford Healthy Schools partnership. The project trained Year 5 pupils as anti-racism captains to lead peer education, celebrate diversity, and challenge prejudice school-wide.
Pupils learned about specific areas of racism and were able to have the time to expand on them further through games, activities, case studies, role play, debates and discussions. By doing this the pupils had multiple ways of learning and understanding about racism.
The participants created surveys in order to access their peers’ understanding of racism.
They created manifestos and class room art work displaying the definition of racism and definition of allyship. They also explored activities such as active listening and in order to develop compassion and equip them with the skills to be supportive allies.
The group also visited Salford’s museum and gallery where the pupils had the opportunity to learn the history of Salford. They then examined this through an anti-racist lens discussing what had changed in Salford and what hadn’t. They explored the history of racism, a topic that the pupils were particularly interested in and enjoyed thoroughly. Having the time and space to spend an entire session on the history and origins of racism enabled the pupils to be able to recognise it and have an understanding on why people are racist today.
The pupils finished the project by creating an assembly to deliver to their peers.
