#SRtRCSpotlight: 7 Years of Anti-Racism Education with Blackburn Rovers

Recently, the North East Campaign team partnered with the Blackburn Rovers Community Trust to deliver a day of anti-racism workshops.

The event was a resounding success, with around 70 pupils from local primary schools participating in interactive workshops on hate crime and stereotypes. The young people understood how to identify prejudiced behaviours and respond effectively, with their challenge toolkit, empowering them to foster a more inclusive and respectful environment.

We were delighted to welcome Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Adam Khan and defender Tom Atcheson, who joined the event and shared their perspectives on racism within football and beyond. Their involvement was inspiring, and they served as excellent role models for the pupils, demonstrating the importance of standing up against discrimination.

For the past seven years, we have worked closely with Blackburn Rovers Community Trust and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support in using their platform to promote anti-racism. Empowering young people with the skills to be effective allies is at the heart of what we do and events like this are a testament to the positive change we can achieve together.

Richard Offiong, Campaign Co-ordinator, reflected on the success of the visit:

“We were invited down by Blackburn Rovers Community Trust to help spread the message of anti-racism to primary school children in the borough of Blackburn with Darwen.

The work we have done highlights the efforts being made through anti-racism work in the community such as reporting racism when we see it and identifying hate crime.

Furthermore, being supported by Adam and Tom, who it was great to have come down, really inspired the children and it was great to see them engage with the group and find out from them what they have studied and how it can be applied in and out of football.

They then went onto ask a lot of insightful questions to the players and hopefully they go on to tell their family, friends and fellow pupils about the importance of spreading the message of anti-racism”.
