SRtRC welcome decision of England team taking the knee at World Cup 2022

We welcome Gareth Southgate’s decision for the England team to take the knee at the World Cup. The gesture has become a symbol to promote a message of anti-racism and inclusivity which became widespread in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd.

“It’s what we stand for as a team and have done for a long period of time, we understand that in the Premier League the clubs have decided to only do that for certain games, big occasions, we feel this is the biggest and we think it is a strong statement that will go around the world for young people in particular to see that inclusivity is very important.”

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate has long been a supporter and patron of SRtRC, reaching back to his days as captain of Premier League club Middlesbrough. He features in our new magazine discussing his experience and the decisions he has made relating to the impact of racism in the game.
