SRtRC Fringe meeting at Labour Party Conference 2024
Show Racism the Red Card showed up in full force with a phenomenal line up of panellists at the Labour party conference 2024 in the heart of Liverpool, a place of deep histories of black settlers who since post 1750’s has contributed to all aspects of Liverpool life, laying the foundations for the rich multicultural wider society.
SRTRC delivered a pertinent discussion on their remarkable work in challenging racism, prompting many high-profile politicians who shared their lived experiences of discrimination and racism within the UK. The discussion began with reflections on the 2024 Summer UK riots, the unrest caused by the views of the far right within society, and how the plight of many migrants and refugee’s left destitute, fleeing conflict, war and persecution, has been used as a political football to spark off othering people of colour.
This year’s panel featured senior minister Seema Malhotra whose ending remarks quoted, ‘we have more in common than what divides us’. Other prominent speakers included ex-professional footballers John Barnes MBE, Trevor Sinclair & Peter Reid, community champion Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP, and other industry leaders.
There was a rallying cry that we all need to be anti-racist and seek to educate ourselves. We can spread the global movement of allyship to end the scourge of racism. In summary, many speakers made the point that no matter our culture, ethnicity and nationality difference, the solidarity of being human should make us all realise that we have more in common than divides us.
SRTRC would like to thank everyone who joined us at our fringe event – with a particular welcome to new attendees. We’re glad to have had you with us.
We look forward to seeing you next year in Liverpool – but if you can’t wait until then, then why not participate in our SRtRC Wear Red Day on 18th October.
