SRtRC Delivers Initial Teacher Education Training on Anti-Racism at Leeds Beckett University

Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is currently collaborating with the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality (CRED), to deliver a bespoke Initial Teacher Education (ITE) anti-racism programme for pre-service trainee teachers at the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University.

The four-session pilot programme covers the academic year 24-25 and draws on the findings and recommendations from the Anti-Racism Framework (ARF) for ITE, developed by Newcastle University, Leeds Beckett University and the National Education Union, to provide opportunities for trainee teachers to develop their racial cognisance and anti-racist pedagogy.

Programme modules for the training include themes such as:

  • Anti-racist Pedagogy and Curriculum: Building your anti-racism teaching toolkit.
  • Anti-racism when on Placement: Understanding your roles and responsibilities.
  • Reflective Practice and Personal Development: Sustaining your commitment to anti-racism.

Initial feedback from the first session has been overwhelmingly positive. Trainees have praised the interactive nature of the training, its relevance to their studies, and its focus on educational disparity. The use of academic articles to underpin the sessions has also been noted as particularly impactful.

SRtRC aims to roll this programme out to all UK-accredited ITE providers following the completion of the pilot in May 2025.

Get Involved

To support this work, we invite you to participate in a short survey about use of the anti-racism framework for ITE (https://www.anti-racism-framework.co.uk).

This survey is led by Professors Heather Smith (Newcastle University) and Vini Lander (Director of CRED at Leeds Beckett University), alongside the project Co-I, Dr Lydia Wysocki & several partner organisations, including UCET, NASBTT, NALDIC, CRED, SRtRC, NEU, ARTEN and Citizens UK.

The survey aims to gather evaluative responses, in order to further enhance the ARF and welcomes case studies showcasing how the framework has been applied.

The survey link is available at https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/newcastle/arfimpact and it will remain open until 31st March 2025.
