#Spotlight: Welsh anti-racism education with Swansea City AFC
On Monday, July 15th, the Swansea City AFC Foundation and Show Racism the Red Card Wales organized a club day at the Swansea.com Stadium for three of Swansea City Foundation’s partner schools through their Premier League Primary Stars program and funding from the PFA for Show Racism the Red Card.
Pupils from three local primary schools from Pembrokeshire, Monkton Priory Community Primary, St Florence VC and Golden Grove School, attended the Club Day arranged by the Swansea City Foundation. During the event, the young attendees engaged in an anti-racism workshop from Show Racism the Red Card as well as enjoyed a tour of the Swansea.com Stadium and additional workshop led by Swansea City Foundation staff on the importance of teamwork.
During the workshop led by Show Racism the Red Card, the pupils engaged in discussions about what racism is, explored the manifestations of racism in football and society, and were educated on how to actively oppose racism by learning to safely challenge, report, and support individuals following a racist incident, as well as how they can educate themselves to become anti-racist.
Mr Lawrence from Monkton Priory Community primary school said
“The pupils were super engaged and the work highlighted the importance of educating the younger generation on showing racism the red card. We quizzed the pupils on the bus on the way home and they all recalled where we might see racism, who might be affected and why”
Dean Pymble, Campaign Manager for Wales added
“Using the brand of Swansea City AFC, Premier League through the PL Primary Stars and Show Racism the Red Card to engage and educate pupils on the importance of standing against racism is essential. To move towards Welsh Governments vision of an anti-racist nation by 2030 we need to use different methods and vehicles to engage and educate young people and adults of how to actively become anti-racist. Huge thanks to the continued support from the PFA on funding these important workshops in football clubs across Wales and England.”
