#Spotlight: Training with Theatr na nÓg
On Thursday, August 22nd, the Show Racism the Red Card Wales team visited the cast and staff of Theatr na nÓg to provide anti-racism training in conjunction with their latest performance, “The Fight.”
Theatr na nÓg is an award-winning theatre company known for producing ‘captivating tales and enchanting stage performances’.
During the workshops, the Show Racism the Red Card Wales team enjoyed deep and meaningful conversations about racism and anti-racism in the world of theatre. Theatr na nÓg requested anti-racism training sessions for all staff and cast members as they prepare to perform the brand-new school show, The Fight.
The Fight, written by Geinor Styles and directed by Kev McCurdy, tells the story of Merthyr-born boxer Cuthbert Taylor and his experience of the colour bar in 1930s Britain and comes complete with a scheme of work to allow pupils to deepen their understanding of racism in the UK.
SRtRC training workshops gave Theatr na nÓg a chance to reflect and discuss how racism manifests now, how this could impact them and their work, and plan the next steps. As with all SRtRC adult sessions, the content was bespoke and adapted to the organisation’s needs.
Dean Pymble, Campaign Manager for Wales at Show Racism the Red Card said:
“Show Racism the Red Card are committed to supporting all sectors to move forward on their anti-racism journey, working with the arts sector to increase their knowledge of how racism manifests and providing them with the tools to dismantle racism is essential.
Theatr na nÓg demonstrate a strong commitment to creating an anti-racist culture throughout the arts sector. The Fight will help schools explore the experiences of Black people in the 1930’s through Cuthbert Taylor but also reflect on how racism still impacts people that make up part of the global majority in society today.”
We received some fantastic feedback from Theatr na nÓg participants:
“A well structured and informative session. Delivered by an inspiring team, full of knowledge and empathy. Whatever level of confidence you are at, these sessions feltlike an introduction and reminder of raising awareness of being actively anti-racist and what racism is. I will be recommending this workshop to everyone!”
“Show Racism the Red Card are an excellent team doing vital work for anti-racism education in Wales”
“Our session with SRtRC was incredibly valuable. The session was informative and enjoyable, and was delivered in a relaxed manner that made us feel comfortable to share ideas and experiences. This has provided us with a strong foundation of knowledge that we can integrate into all of our work and has given us the tools to be an actively anti-racist organisation.”
