Shrimpers Trust, Southend United and SRtRC collaborate on new project

We are collectively proud to announce the first series of ‘Shrimpers Heritage’ trading cards, celebrating the historic contributions of Southend United players and their impact on the club, game and wider society.

Southend United has hosted some significant members of the footballing community, and this ‘Shrimpers Heritage’ project helps uncover the hidden histories of the club’s Black and Minority Ethnic players through a unique set of 12 illustrated trading cards.

Each card tells a story, paired with lesson plans and information sheets to spark classroom discussions on identity, representation, and inclusion. These trading cards act as portals to a digital exhibition archive celebrating the ‘2025 class’ with longer biographies and interviews profiling the series one cohort.

The workshop aims to foster an understanding of discrimination and racism through various interactive activities.

By the end of the workshop, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of key terminology related to racism and learn how to be allies in the fight against racism. They will be equipped with the skills to respond to racism effectively and safely, knowing how to address and report incidents appropriately. Furthermore, the workshop aims to inspire students to become active citizens, advocating for equality and inclusivity in their communities.

Chris Powell MBE is the first player announcement of the trading card series. Chris said of the project:

“This is a fantastic project which all parties involved have done brilliantly to put together. Whilst the issue of racism in football and society has improved since my playing days, there is still work to do. Initiatives like this excellent workshop and trading card set can only help, by engaging and educating children at a young age. I am ecstatic to have been chosen to launch it.” Chris Powell MBE

A spokesperson for Sporting Heritage CIC commented:

“We are delighted to support the creation of this innovative trading card series celebrating the heritage of Southend United, and helping to bring the rich and diverse history of the club alive both in the classroom, and for the wider Shrimper community”

Finally from Show Racism the Red Card:

“At Show Racism the Red Card, we know how powerful positive role models can be in inspiring young people to challenge stereotypes and become allies in the fight against racism. This project uses the history and heritage of Southend United to bring those lessons to life in classrooms, showing pupils that representation matters and that football has the power to unite communities. By combining education with celebration, we can give the next generation the tools and confidence to stand up and safely challenge all forms of discrimination”
