Show Racism the Red Card Petition to put Anti-Racism on the Curriculum

We won’t root racism out of our society without education. But right now, anti-racism education is not on the school curriculum.

The Department for Education is currently holding a curriculum review, with the call for evidence ending on 23 November. As part of Show Racism the Red Card’s work to marshal support for adding anti-racism to the curriculum, we’re building a petition to help show that this issue is a high priority for the public.

Nazek Ramadan, Director of Migrant Voice, said: “People are not born racist. Racism is learned. We need anti-racism education in schools to combat that.

The far-right riots which swept the country earlier this year show just how important embedding anti-racism in the curriculum is. We saw children as young as 12 engaged in racist attacks. That should never have happened. We should be providing children with the knowledge and tools to recognise and combat racism, not be drawn into it.

We firmly support Show Racism the Red Card’s petition in calling for anti-racism education to be in the curriculum.”

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) strongly support this petition and encourage all to sign. This is what their assistant General Secretary and their Black & Ethnic Minority Members sectional secretary have to say:

Ben Selby, Fire Brigades Union Assistant General Secretary:

“This summer, the far right mounted a terrifying and deliberate campaign of racist violence and intimidation. This did not come from nowhere: for decades, mainstream politicians and the media have stoked anti-migrant hate.

The government must confront this head on, and introduce anti-racism to the school curriculum as a first step.”

Amit Malde, Fire Brigades Union Black & Ethnic Minority Members Sectional Secretary said:

“Anti-racist education is key to tackling hate, discrimination and injustice. All children and young people deserve a space to discuss race and challenge racism, and to be part of changing our society for the better.

Education secretary Bridget Phillipson can ensure millions of children receive this vital education by adding anti-racism to the school curriculum.”
