Responding to Karamoko Dembélé’s Revelation of Racial Abuse.

Show Racism the Red Card is saddened to hear about Karamoko Dembélé’s experience of racial abuse and bullying while attending a Scotland youth international camp. We recognise how difficult it can be to speak about experiences of racism, particularly those experienced at a young age, and believe accounts such as Karamoko’s should be listened to and taken seriously.

Every young player should be able to participate in football in an environment where they feel safe, respected and supported. It is equally important that players feel confident speaking up if they experience or witness racism and know that appropriate support is available.

Education has a vital role to play in creating those environments and preventing racism before it occurs. We therefore welcome the Scottish FA’s commitment to this work and are pleased to be working together on a subsidised education programme for member clubs.

The programme will provide education for players, youth players, club staff and leaders, helping people recognise and challenge racism and strengthening inclusive environments throughout Scottish football.

Our partnership with the Scottish FA provides an important opportunity to reach people at every level of the game. Through education, effective reporting and meaningful support for those who experience discrimination, we can continue working together towards a game in which everyone feels welcome, respected and able to participate.
