NEU on Show Racism the Red Card’s Event with Newcastle United FC
Nothing means more than receiving strong feedback, that acknowledges the power of our events from attendees. Here, NEU’s Regional Treasurer shares her impressions of the education event held at Newcastle United Football Club on 8 May 2026:
When we received a request from Sarah, our Deputy General Secretary to attend an event for Show Racism the Red Card Brian & I were pleased to oblige. When it transpired that the event was to take place at the hallowed ground of St. James’ Park we were delighted. As season ticket holders, St James’ Park is an iconic venue, so to represent the NEU at such an important event was doubly exciting.
Now in its 30th year, Show Racism the Red Card, the anti-racism education charity has reached 1.5 million young people, certainly an impressive accolade.
120 excited young people (and the adults accompanying them) streamed into the conference suits on Friday 8th May eagerly awaiting the days activities.
We participated in two workshops – the first, challenging stereotypes and assumptions, identifying what prejudice is & how to challenge it, the second, identifying racism on digital platforms, fake news & how to stay safe on line. It’s frightening how things have changed since I was a young girl! From an educator’s perspective, the sessions were well delivered, engaging & high quality, I would certainly recommend them for your settings.
A highlight of the day was a stadium tour, visiting the press room, changing rooms & of course the thrill of walking out of the tunnel to the pitch. The children were beyond excited and fully appreciated the significance of where they were.
As if the day could not have got better, on the return to the base room each child was presented with a Newcastle United shirt by the NUFC Foundation, an amazing gesture. The final thrill, a question-and-answer session was fantastic with the appearance of Charlotte Potts, a Newcastle United women’s team player (who had announced her retirement and pregnancy that morning), Shola Ameobi, Olivier Bernard, Yoane Wissa and my favourite, the legendary Joelinton! It was insightful to listen to their personal experiences & how they have taken steps to deal with events. Full credit to these players for giving up their time for such an important cause. The children were a credit to their schools, raising thoughtful and insightful points – although there is still work to do the evidence seen in today’s sessions was inspiring and encouraging for the years ahead.
It is amazing that the education charity founded in North Tyneside by Ged Grebby reaches so many young people in both the UK and internationally and has positively impacted so many people. To hear Ged publicly acknowledge the support the NEU has give the charity over the years made me a very proud member of the NEU.
Long may your amazing work continue!
