International Romani Day

The 8th April marks International Romani Day. The annual celebration is a great occasion to celebrate Romani culture but also highlight the struggles that Romani people face daily due to prejudices from other communities around the world. Romani people originally descended from India but have lived a nomadic lifestyle for centuries and have become a very diverse community.

The Romani Community is full of diversity and heritage however they have been wrongfully targeted throughout history including during World War 2 II, when they were targeted in their masses during the Holocaust by the Nazi regime with an estimated range of 200,000 – 500,000 Romani and Sinti people murdered.

To this day they continue to face various types of racism in different settings whether that be regarding work/education, living situations or interpersonal racism. A national survey revealed that 47% of Roma people had been racially attacked in the UK. Additionally, high levels of bullying and discrimination is still present in schools towards those with Gypsy, Romani and Traveller backgrounds.

How can you celebrate International Romani Day?

Celebrate International Romani Day by embracing the culture whether that be learning about their music and dance, such as Flamenco or taking part in creating Romani inspired art. It is also important to continue to educate yourself about the history of Romani people, including the contributions of cultural icons like Charlie Chaplin and the rich history of Romani Culture.
