Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson attends Show Racism the Red Card event

Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, recently attended our anti-racism education event at the Hetton Centre, in Hetton-le-Hole, to watch SRtRC educators in action. Young people from local primary schools were invited along to take part in the workshops, where they also had a chance to meet Sunderland AFC stars Wilson Isidor and Aji Alese.

Deputy Leader of Sunderland Council, Cllr Kelly Chequer, was also in attendance and said of the event;

“I am immensely proud to support SRtRC and the fantastic anti-racist education work they do with young people in our city. Promoting a strong sense of belonging and inclusion in our communities and embracing people of all ethnicities across Sunderland is critical, and doing so with the next generation is the only way we will ensure that this is embedded long into the future.“

Show Racism the Red Card, Chief Executive, Ged Grebby said;

“It was great to see Bridget Phillipson MP attend the Show Racism the Red Card event at the Hetton Centre on Wednesday 19th February and praise our team for their delivery of the anti-racism education workshops. Having Sunderland AFC players Wilson Isidor and Aji Alese attend the event was brilliant and their impact on the panel and on the TV clips outstanding. Our thanks to Sunderland City Councillors who attended including Kelly Chequer who was part of the panel and the Hetton Centre for hosting us.”

The event received some brilliant media coverage from both BBC and ITV which can be viewed below. SAFC’s own video on the event is available to view here.
