The recent two-day anti-racism initiative at Cardinal Hume School, held on the 16th and 17th of July, has been hailed as a resounding success. Led by the school’s dedicated teaching staff and supported by Education Workers from Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), the event engaged 750 pupils from Years 7, 8, and 9 in crucial anti-racism education.
Over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday, students participated in a series of three carefully crafted lessons from the online portal, The Education Hub, which facilitated meaningful discussions and learning about racism and its impact. The lessons were punctuated by an interactive assembly for each year group, which further reinforced the lessons and allowed students to express their thoughts and experiences in a supportive environment.
The preparation and effort put in by the teaching staff were evident in the smooth delivery and impactful nature of the lessons. Their dedication to creating an inclusive and informative environment played a crucial role in the event’s success. The behaviour of the pupils was outstanding, demonstrating their engagement and respect for the important topics being discussed.
SRtRC Education Workers played a supportive role, making occasional visits to classrooms during the lessons, to assist and observe the impactful teaching taking place. Their presence helped to bolster the confidence of the teaching staff and ensured that the resources and strategies employed were used to their fullest potential.

Nick Evans, teacher at Cardinal Hume and organiser of the event, expressed his gratitude and satisfaction with the outcome, feeding back to the charity afterwards: “Thank you so much for your time over the last two days. You and the team made a significant impact on both pupils and staff.”
The success of the event at Cardinal Hume is a testament to the power of collaborative efforts in education and the importance of addressing racism through informed and engaging methods. The enthusiastic participation of the students and the dedication of the teaching staff demonstrate a promising step forward in the ongoing fight against racism.
As we celebrate this success, SRtRC remains committed to supporting schools and communities in their efforts to promote equality and challenge racism. Events like this one at Cardinal Hume highlight the positive change that can be achieved when organisations work together towards a common goal.
