SRtRC was delighted to work together with NEU Cymru once again in delivering a joint 2 day training session to Graduate Teacher Training Programme (GTTP) trainee teachers at the University of Wales Trinity St David.
It was a case of new year, new surroundings as Kate and Jason joined the NEU’s Stuart Williams at the UWTSD’s brand new Y Fforwm buiding in Swansea centre.
But it wasn’t just the facilities that were new as the education days saw a reworked programme of workshops also. Alongside the tried-and-tested winning formula of ‘classroom resources’ and ‘recording and reporting’ sessions, staff delivered a session on ‘considering unconscious bias’. This offered the trainee teachers the opportunity to reconsider their own thoughts, opinions, attitudes and actions, as well as how these could impact on their overall teaching. The session went down well, with 100% of survey respondents rating the session as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’.
While 45% of those trainee teachers had encountered racism either in an educational session or in their local area, after SRtRC sessions, 19 out of 20 of those surveyed felt more confident in dealing with this in the future, with one respondent telling us that they felt:
‘100% more confident on how to deal with it [racism]!’
All in all, two days well spent.
