Black History Month 2017

October is Black History Month (BHM) in the UK. You can keep up to date with BHM events nationally and in your region through the excellent Black History Month website.

BHM was first established in the UK in 1987 thanks to the efforts Akyaaba Addai-Sebo and Greater London Council. This makes October 2017 the 30th BHM in the UK. It is an important initiative that seeks to redress the imbalance of historical perspectives and narratives. In America, BHM takes place in February and was established as a month-long initiative in 1970.

Show Racism the Red Card will be promoting Black History Month at all the educational events at football clubs and during our educational work in schools.

The campaign will be encouraging young people to get involved by researching what events are going on in their area to celebrate BHM.

Throughout the month we will highlight articles, where possible, which educate about important people and events. Of course, Black History is more than a month, with opportunities for daily learning and more visibility and awareness of Black History throughout the year.
