We worked with 922 young people and 65 adults last month.
It’s been a busy January for Show Racism the Red Card (Scotland) for our education team delivering an anti-racism or anti-sectarianism message in eleven primary schools, two secondary schools, two grassroots football teams and seven continuing and six professional development sessions for educators.
The participants from schools and clubs across East Renfrewshire, Edinburgh, South Lanarkshire and Glasgow enjoyed participative educational training and CPD opportunities challenging racism and inequality.
They were encouraged to apply critical thought to the stereotypes and misinformation which exist about minority ethnic groups. This can leave an indelible mark on our young people and society and may lead to prejudiced thought, discriminatory action and denial of citizenship rights to many in our communities.
A teacher from East Renfrewshire fed back;
“The knowledge and enthusiasm of the facilitator was brilliant with the activities being spot-on in encouraging discussion. The Continuing Professional Development for our cluster management team was outstanding too!”
The coach from one of the grassroots teams which took part in the anti-sectarianism work said; “The U/15's were buzzing with discussions around sectarianism how it affects the boys and the communities they live in. I am super proud of their behaviour and attitude over the three weeks and hope that these sessions have a positive impact on their future decisions. Huge thanks!”
We are extremely grateful from the partnership funding from East Renfrewshire Council, City of Edinburgh Council, South Lanarkshire Council, Scottish Government Community Safety Unit and the Scottish Football Partnership which made our interventions in January possible. We are looking forward to a busy February too with education taking place in Perth and Kinross and Inverclyde as well as the areas already mentioned.
