Show Racism the Red Card worked in partnership with Leyton Orient FC for a great day of learning and fun.
Around 100 students from from local schools Aldersbrook in Redbridge, Curwen in Newham and Sybourn in Waltham Forest were invited on the 29/1/15 to take part in a series of workshops held at Leyton Orient Football Club.
The day began with a brief introduction by regional manager Steve Goodsell and educators Osei Sankofa and Manisha Tailor. The students then went straight into watching our SRtRC DVD. The film features Ryan Giggs, Thierry Henry and Rachel Yankey among others talking about the dangers of racism and their own personal experiences.
Students had an anti-racism workshop with our inspirational educators which focused on terms and definitions, and also discussed myths around stereotypes. Using specially developed resources we worked with students to encourage participation and discussion, and students came back with some really interesting comments.
They were then treated to a panel comprised of current Leyton Orient players including team captain Kevin Lisbie and Lloyd James, and SRtRC staff member Osei Sankofa and Manisha Tailor.
The students got to test the panel with some very hard questions, from which the three best questions were picked and the winners received a SRtRC T-shirt, SRtRC mini football, and tickets to the Leyton Orient FC home game that weekend. Leyton Orient also provided an extra special prize for the winning question which was a football signed by all the players!
Show Racism the Red Card would like to sincerely thank Leyton Orient FC for their continued and staunch support with this valuable work.
