Show Racism the Red Card’s annual Fortnight of Action will take place between the 9th and 23rd October 2014
“Show Racism the Red Card has received magnificent support from the football clubs, football authorities and fans across the country in supporting its fundamental message of equality and respect. We are confident that the impact of this years action taken at football grounds over the Fortnight of Action will be the strongest ever.
The profile raised through action taken at all professional Scottish Football Clubs will encourage people all across Scotland to promote inclusion and foster good relations in their own communities. We all have a role to play in getting the message across that prejudice whether based on skin colour, religion, nationality or culture, is just not acceptable.”
Vicki Burns, Campiagn Manager, Show Racism the Red Card Scotland
During this two week period all Scottish Professional Football League teams, as well as the Scottish Women’s Premier League, Scottish Women’s Football League and Scottish Junior Super League teams will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and wider Scottish Society.
The Fortnight of Action in Scotland makes a stand against racism. There is a pressing need at this time for communities to unite and stress anti-racism messages. Show Racism the Red Card is a partner of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network and is proud to contribute to the annual FARE Football peoples action weeks.
“The Football People action weeks unites supporters, clubs, ethnic minorities and communities affected by discrimination across the continent in a concerted effort to make discrimination a thing of the past.” (FARE)
The Fortnight of Action got underway with a challenge football match between ex-professional footballers and representatives from the Scottish media.
The challenge football match organised by SRtRC brings together Scottish footballing legends from the past and media pundits to show their support for the campaign.
This year the match was sponsored by Thompsons Solicitor, a huge supporter of the campaign and their continued support of the campaign is invaluable.
Patrick McGuire from Thompsons Solicitors said:
“Thompsons Solicitors are honoured to be asked to sponsor the launch match of the 2014 Fortnight of Action and delighted to do so. In my professional work Is see far too many examples of people being discriminated, marginalised and abused. Racism in all its guises ought to have been consigned to the history books decades ago but sadly far too many people still have to suffer at the hands of racists and bigots.
“Sport and particularly football cuts through barriers like very few other activities can. The message of inclusion and diversity that Show Racism the Red Card promotes resonates and brings change throughout all of Scotland for school children to retired citizens. I and everyone at Thompsons Solicitors are proud to even be a very small part of that important work.”
Ex-professional footballers who pulled on their boots to support Show Racism the Red Card’s Fortnight of Action included Gordon Smith, Gerry Britton, Barry Ferguson, Tom Boyd, Robbie Winters and Jim Duffy. Media pundits included Peter Martin, Chick Young and Gordon Parks along side Jim Murphy MP.
Pupils from local primary schools Craigton Primary and Ibrox primary attended Show Racism the Red Card workshops in the morning and enjoyed a coaching session lead by Mickey Weir and Derek Ferguson – SRtRC coaches.
