Young people take part in full-day event, sponsored by Derbyshire County Council
Show Racism the Red Card was able to organise an educational event with Derby County FC thanks to the support of Derby County Community Trust and Derbyshire County Council.
Year 5&6 pupils from three Derbyshire Primary Schools; Blackwell, Ladywood and Christ the King, were able to come to Pride Park for the full-day.
Jane O’Byrne, Health & Wellbeing Consultant at Derbyshire County Council officially opened the event after a short introduction from DCFC Community Trust Inclusion Manager, Richard Astle.
A carousel of workshops was provided for the guests. SRtRC ran a workshop that looked at stereotypes and a definition of racism – led by former professional footballer, Christian Roberts, football artist Colin Yates ran a session that touched on issues of identity with a practical art activity that included mask making and DCFC Community Trust provided guests with a tour of Pride Park.
All of the young people were able to experience the three sessions during the morning and participated in the activities and tour with enthusiasm.
Following a break for lunch all the groups came back together in the Pedigree Suite to see screening of the SRtRC film and take part in a Question and Answer session with a panel of special guests.
Jane O’Byrne, Richard Astle and Christian Roberts were all able to join the panel, as was Derby County FC goalkeeper Lee Grant.
Lee and the panel handled the young people’s questions about racism very well and there were some quite difficult questions about the origin of racism! SRtRC T-Shirts were signed by Lee and given away to the panel’s favourite three questions of the afternoon. Lee also signed copies of the DCFC poster for all of the young people to take away with their SRtRC goody bags.
A big thank you from SRtRC to Derby County FC, Community Trust and Richard Astle for hosting and organising the event. Also big thanks to Jane O’Byrne for inviting the schools and to Derbyshire County Council for sponsoring the event.
