According to today’s Daily Express, 98% of you, the British public, ‘Demand that we close borders to ALL new migrants’
Reaching a new all time low, the tabloid goes on to explain that they have launched a ‘crusade’ against planned changes in EU policy regarding the immigration of people from A2 countries including Romania and Bulgaria.
Warning us of a ‘flood’ a ‘swarm’ and a ‘rush’ the dehumanising sensationalist language is scaremongering and dramatic. However, on closer scrutiny, it is no surprise to see that any ‘evidence’ or substance is extremely lacking. Let’s take the attention grabbing headline and subject it to some critique, ‘98% demand ban new migrants’ – How big is the sample? What context was the question framed in? How broad and wide ranging is the sample? Even those with little knowledge and understanding of the process of research and statistics can see the unbelievable bias and lack of any objectivity. Even if the poll showed that 100% of people agreed with the xenophobic sentiment, we need to be asking the questions: just how representative are the Daily Express readers of the entire British population? And ‘What does this really say about Britain’s attitudes to migration?
In an attempt to add legitimacy and weight we see completely random estimated figures from the right wing think tank ‘Migration Watch’ instilling fear of a ‘migrant tide’ and source-less statistics that are incomprehensible. Can anyone make head or tail of this? ‘One in three jobs currently advertised with the country’s leading recruiter-28,577 out of 87,786 – is based in Britain’
Whilst it may be easy for most of us to laugh and dismiss such ill informed hype, not everyone has that privilege. For many, who are living in extreme poverty, experiencing long term unemployment, and are target to devastating cuts to welfare, this commentary provides an easy scapegoat and an apparently justified outlet for their anger and despair.
Conservative MP Peter Bone, shows his full and gushing support for this ‘crusade’ telling us that ‘once again the Daily Express is speaking for the British people’ and that allowing more Eastern European migrants in will ‘create social tensions’
It is absolutely certain that social tensions will rise, and that the British people who are Immigrants, descendents of immigrants, or who are perceived to be immigrants will experience growing and intensified abuse, hate crime and racism as a direct result of this baseless sensationalist propaganda.
Today sees the launch of a brand new Immigration myth buster in partnership between SRtRC and Unison, very timely indeed with these growing xenophobic attacks from the right wing tabloid press.
