Engaging with UNISON members enhances partnership
Show Racism the Red Card organised a focus group with the support of UNISON representatives from the North West region on Wednesday 17th July. The idea behind the focus group was to hear from UNISON members about how the campaign could better engage with members and branches in the region and share information about the work of SRtRC.
In the morning session the participants split in to two groups and discussed a number of questions relating to SRtRC and the campaign’s work. The SRtRC team was interested to hear from participants about their perceptions of the campaign's aims and activities.
Following useful discussions in the morning, in the afternoon all participants came back together to discuss ways SRtRC could work closer with branches in the region and resources that would be useful to UNISON members.
The day concluded with a personal testimony from former Liverpool FC, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers player and SRtRC Honorary Patron, Howard Gayle. Howard spoke movingly about racism he had experienced growing up and in football and why he supports the campaign.
The focus group gave SRtRC staff lots to think about and will hopefully lead to a strengthening of our relationship with UNISON in the area. All the participants reported a clearer understanding of the work of the campaign and expressed an interest in attending our events in the area.
