Show Racism the Red Card Wales held a full day Conference in Bangor University for just over 100 teachers of tomorrow!
In their final few days of training, the trainees spent the day in a variety of workshops aimed at improving confidence and knowledge and empowering the future teachers to deal with racism in the classroom and society.
First up was Simon Richards, Education Manager for Wales, who introduced the trainees to the legal definition of a racist incident and talked through the steps to take to deal with issues, aiming to ensure that the trainees felt comfortable asking questions and fully engaging in workshops. The trainees were also treated to real life stories of racism from ex professional footballer Leeroy Roseiner whose presentation proved to be both passionate and inspirational.
Next up was a terminology workshop led by Education worker, Chris Stokes. This session was aimed at improving the trainee’s understanding of racial language and to improve their knowledge on acceptable/ unacceptable words. Chris also highlighted the history behind some of these words and their link to the pain and suffering that still exists.
Before lunch, the trainees were given the opportunity to work through SRTRC Wales’s educational resources. They were given tips on how to deliver their own anti-racism sessions and were given the chance to use the resources and interactive games.
Finally, the trainees were given a scenario based workshop, where within small groups they had to work their way through various scenarios of real life racist incidents. This gave the trainees a chance to share ideas as well as use the knowledge they had developed throughout the day.
The day was a great success, with many trainees commenting on how much they gained from the conference:
“My favourite part of the day was hearing from those who have experience of the issues covered"
“I found the terminology workshop very useful as I can now feel confident in explaining why words are inappropriate”.
The education team are looking forward to going back to the University next year! For more information about our teacher training contact our Welsh Education Manager:
