SRTRC are very disappointed the member clubs voted against minimum sanctions to deal with racism and sectarianism.
We welcomed the resolution put forward at yesterday's AGM as it would have given greater weight to our campaign to eradicate racism and sectarianism from football and wider society. Stricter regulations would have been a clear deterrent to those who felt racist or sectarian behavoiur was acceptable. We now hope to see the speedy development of an effective action plan.
However, sanctions and punishments are only part of how the issue is dealt with. We firmly believe that nobody is born prejudiced and that the key to eradicating racism and sectarianism is education. The Scottish FA and its individual member clubs have always been extremely supportive of our educational programmes to prevent discriminatory behaviour and make football a more inclusive sport. We look forward to working with all of them to continue to promote the message that racist and sectarian behaviour will not be tolerated in Scottish football.
