The murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich on Wednesday (22nd May) afternoon was senseless and tragic. The thoughts of all at SRtRC are with his family.
On Wednesday evening it became clear that some groups and individuals were using this shocking incident to espouse hate and racism on social media outlets. There have also been attacks on mosques and an English Defence League protest in Woolwich.
Groups like the EDL are opportunistically using this tragedy to promote their views and spread fear.
People should not use this murder to incite hatred and prejudice, society must be united against violence. The actions of two people are not representative of the majority of Muslims.
The Muslim Council of Britain released this statement “This is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn this unreservedly.
“Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We understand the victim is a serving member of the Armed Forces. Muslims have long served in this country's Armed Forces, proudly and with honour.
“This attack on a member of the Armed Forces is dishonourable, and no cause justifies this murder. This action will no doubt heighten tensions on the streets of the United Kingdom.
“We call on all our communities, Muslim and non-Muslim, to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail.”
