SRtRC are proud to have worked alongside the Stephen Lawrence Foundation
On the 22nd of April 1993, Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racist attack which shook the country and lead to a re-evaluation of the way in which racist incidents are defined, reported and prosecuted.
An investigation into Stephen’s murder and the subsequent handling of the case lead to the Police being deemed ‘institutionally racist’ by Lord McPherson, who’s enquiry also delivered a new definition of a racist incident.
A racist incident is now defined by the McPherson Report as "any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person". A new code of practice was also established to help in the recording of other racist crimes.
Since the murder of her son, Doreen Lawrence has worked tirelessly to campaign for the rights of minority groups across the UK; setting up the Stephen Lawrence Foundation which transforms the lives of young people and aims to achieve real social change.
Show Racism the Red Card has been privileged to work with both Doreen Lawrence and the Stephen Lawrence Foundation for a number of years and are hugely grateful for the support we have received, particularly from Doreen who attended no few than six Show Racism the Red Card educational events last year including campaign events at Newcastle and Cardiff.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to pay tribute to Doreen and her work to challenge racism in society and educate against racial prejudice and would invite all supporters of our campaign to use Twitter and the #rememberstephen to show their support for the foundation and help mark the 20th anniversary of Stephen’s death.
Here is just a selection of the messages we have received to mark the anniversary:
