The Lilywhites host young people from Preston primary schools at full-day event
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) returned to Deepdale Stadium for a full-day educational event with Preston North End FC.
Young people from four local Primary schools came to the Invincibles Suite at the ground to take part in a carousel of workshops from Show Racism the Red Card, Preston and Western Lancashire Racial Equality Council which looked at Hate Crime and a ground tour from Preston North End FC staff and volunteers.
The workshops went well. The young people were engaged by the SRtRC and Hate Crime workshops. The SRtRC workshop looked at stereotypes, where they come from and a definition of racism. P&WL REC’s workshop included a ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ style quiz which was very well received.
The ground tour was a highlight of the morning for many of the pupils as there were quite a few Preston fans amongst the audience. They got to see areas of the stadium not normally accessible to the public including the dressing rooms and dug-out area.
In the afternoon all the groups came back together in the Invincibles Suite to see a screening of the new SRtRC film and take part in a Q&A session with special guests, PNE players John Mousinho and Scott Laird.
There were some fantastic questions from the audience and SRtRC were able to award signed t-shirts, mini footballs and wristbands to the people who asked the panel’s favourite questions. Scott and John had a difficult job choosing but selected Nathan from St Joseph’s, Abni also from St Joseph’s and Hannah from St Bernard’s who asked ‘Have you ever been racist yourself?’, ‘If someone is being racist what should you do?’ and ‘Does racism affect your playing?’ respectively.
SRtRC would like to thank Preston North End FC, Chris and Simon for their help in organising the day, Nafysa, Laura and Steve from Preston and Western Lancashire REC for running the Hate Crime awareness workshops and the teachers from St Joseph’s, St Bernard’s Holme Slack and St Mary Magdalen Primary Schools for bringing their young people to the event. We look forward to returning to the club in the future.
