Show Racism the Red Card was delighted to host their first event of 2013 at Heart of Midlothian FC on Tuesday 29 January, in partnership with Heart of Midlothian FC and the City of Edinburgh Council.
The event involved primary seven pupils from Bruntsfield and St Joseph’s Primary Schools who participated in a day of fun and interactive education.
The young people engaged in a carousel of workshops throughout the morning, which considered the dangers of racism and sectarianism and presented an opportunity for the young people to offer their views on these topical and pertinent issues. The morning also involved an exciting tour of the stadium.
During the afternoon session Show Racism the Red Card screened their brand new anti-racism educational film, which features some of the game’s greatest players; Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba. The pupils then had the opportunity to act as media journalists as part of a role play activity and posed some tough questions to a guest panel. The panel included Heart of Midlothian FC first team players Mehdi Taouil and Arvydas Novikovas, ex-professional footballers / Show Racism the Red Card coaches Derek Ferguson, Gary MacKay and Michael Weir, along with Diana Dodd who is Principal Officer for Equalities within the City of Edinburgh Council.
Diana Dodd said:
“The City of Edinburgh Council is pleased that Show Racism the Red Card and Hearts FC are hosting another event for primary school children.
“These events are much enjoyed by children.
“The workshops are of a high standard and a good support for the work being carried out in our schools to challenge and change attitudes and behaviours, whether on the pitch, in communities or in schools.”
The pupils were delighted to receive their Show Racism the Red Card goody bags at the end of the event which included a signed Show Racism the Red Card / Heart of Midlothian FC poster.
The event was a great success and we would like to thank all involved.
