SRtRC and KIO take part in fringe meeting for Unison Black Members' conference
Workers from Show Racism the Red Card and Kick it Out came together last weekend for a busy fringe meeting at Unison’s Annual Black Members’ Conference. The fringe meeting, attended by the Director of Kick it Out, Roisin Wood and their Media and Communications Officer, Danny Lynch, provided the 80 delegates who attended with an opportunity to find out more about the work undertaken by each organisation.
After an informative presentation from Roisin on the work of Kick it Out, Craig Bankhead, Education Manager from Show Racism the Red Card, provided an overview of the SRtRC campaign. Former professional footballers, Olivier Bernard and Howard Gayle also spoke about their work with charity. Olivier spoke about the impact of professional football players in the classroom while Howard talked about his experience of racism as a football player in the 1980s.
Questions from the delegates were on a number of issues around the subject of racism. Many attendees spoke of the lack of black managers in the professional game while others spoke about racism in wider society. The panel gave their opinions on all of the questions including stories from their own experience.
The conference delegates also had a chance to find out more about the SRtRC campaign at their stall in the ballroom. Union members had the chance to chat to members of the staff and ex-professionals about the work carried out by Show Racism the Red Card and they were also able to take away football team posters and other merchandise.
