"Prejudice is not acceptable in any form," Newcastle boss tells premiere
Newcastle United FC Manager Alan Pardew was joined by two stars of his first team yesterday at the launch of Show Racism the Red Card’s new educational DVD.
Alongside Pardew were Newcastle’s Italian full-back Davide Santon and Argentinian midfielder Jonas Gutierrez – all three taking questions from an enthusiastic audience from North East schools.
Young people from Percy Main Primary School, Corbridge Middle School and Chillingham Primary School were the first to see the new film before getting a chance to talk to the panel of current players and ex-professionals.
Pardew was asked by one student if any of his players had suffered racist abuse, and if he had ever considered taking his players off the pitch as a result.
“All the players at some stage have unfortunately gone to games and heard remarks that are inappropriate, or unacceptable,” Pardew said.
“They are all very much aware that there are in the public eye and that they need to set the right example, show people how to deal with racism and to talk about it.
“The message we want to send out is that prejudice is not acceptable in any form.”
The film has been produced by Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) to help teachers effectively challenge racism and promote equality amongst young people in schools and other educational settings.
Also taking part in the panel were ex-professionals and SRtRC ambassadors Gary Bennett, John Anderson, Richard Offiong and Trevor Benjamin, they were also joined by Fifpro’s Tony Higgins and SRtRC Campaign Worker Jo Wallis.
Newcastle defender, Davide Santon, attending his first SRtRC event said: “I agree with my coach – I think we’re all the same and we have to have respect for everyone.”
The young people also took part in a range of educational workshops to learn more about racism before being taken on special tour of St James’s Park
Ged Grebby, SRtRC Chief Executive said: “It was great to launch our new film at St James’s Park given the excellent support Newcastle United have shown our campaign over the last 17 years.
“To have Alan Pardew, Jonas Gutierrez and Davide Santon, as well as Derek Lambias present shows the great backing that the club gives to our work.”
