Young people in the region Show Racism the Red Card
Young people from South Hylton Primary School Sunderland and Hedworth Lane Primary School in South Hylton attended an event at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light hosted by Show Racism the Red Card.
The young people had an opportunity to take part in workshops delivered by the team on anti-racism issues such as stereotyping and discrimination, they also had a chance to see the ground, being led on a tour by the stadium's tour guides.
The day of learning was topped off by viewing the new Show Racism the Red Card DVD, which includes interviews with players such as Seb Larsson, Alan Pardew, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Jason Roberts, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Shola Ameobi.
Show Racism the Red Card’s Educational worker Laura Pidcock said about the event: “We’re delighted to be returning to the Stadium of Light and working alongside Sunderland AFC once more.
“The young people from Sunderland and South Tyneside will no doubt benefit from the event, and we hope the footballers can inspire them with the anti-racism message.
“The support that Sunderland AFC has given us over the years shows their commitment to tackling racism in football and society.”
After the workshops there was a question and answer session with a host of players past and present including; Olivier Bernard, Kevin Ball, Richard Offiong, Trevor Benjamin, Gary Bennett, Ji Dong Won, Louis Saha and Adam Johnson. The young people got a chance to ask the players questions on their experiences of racism, with Louis Saha giving his earliest account of racism when he was a child visiting a shop with his father. Louis went on to say “the only way to fight racism is with courage”.
Prizes for the best question went to Billy Walker from Hedworth Lane Primary, Fabiene and Abbey from South Hylton Primary. They all had their t-shirts and mini footballs signed by the players.
Before heading home, all the young people queued up for an autograph from their favourite players and a group photograph to remember the day by.
After the event Louis Saha tweeted: “Was at the StadiumOfLight for "Showing racism the red card" campaign and really appreciate the work there. Brilliant kids”
The event was one of three big events being held at Barclay’s Premier League clubs in England by Show Racism The Red Card on Tuesday, November 13th. Others were held at Aston Villa’s Villa Park and Norwich City’s Carrow Road.
