UCU and TUC representatives praise our educational resource
Show Racism the Red Card has produced an educational resource aiming to tackle homophobia within society. Homophobia: Let's Tackle It is available from our online shop. Lynn Collins, UCU Regional Advisor, and Peter Purton, LGBT Policy Officer, TUC review the product.
"Show Racism the Red Card has produced an excellent resource for use in school and colleges tackling the issue of homophobia. The approach they take - using a diverse cross section of sports and personalities - means that the topic is dealt with in a format accessible to a wide audience, from Key stage 2 through to post 16 students. The DVD and materials are well designed and clearly presented, with particular attention given to the sensitivities of open discussions on sexuality, without losing any of the messages that discrimination and prejudice is wrong. The accompanying education pack gives plenty of ideas of how to use the film creatively and to deliver different elements of the curriculum at all stages. It will help educators tackle the issue of homophobia from a range of perspectives, and raises the wider issues of language and cyber bullying which can lead to discussions about wider equality and discrimination issues.
"This is a great resource for LGBT history month but also something that could be used throughout the year.
"I would also commend the film to trade unions and trade union educators, as the DVD in particular would assist in promoting debate and discussion about the nature of homophobia at any branch meeting conference or course. Materials can easily be adapted to consider the issues in a workplace context."
"The TUC is delighted to see this new education pack become available at a time when the FA has (some would say, at last) promised to take the endemic problem of anti-LGBT hostility in football seriously. Massive advances have been made in the last two decades both in terms of legal rights, and popular acceptance of LGBT people, but two critical areas seem to have escaped this transformation: football terraces, and education, and the two are of course linked.
"The DVD is a really powerful educational resource if used properly - and the education pack provides the support required to achieve this, with basic information and definitions, case studies, clear arguments and cautions too about possible pitfalls. The individual stories placed throughout are perhaps the most powerful argument of all for the necessity of schools taking this material into the curriculum. Warmly recommended!"
