Anti-Racism / Anti-Sectarianism Educational Events with Grass Roots Football Clubs
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) in partnership with the SPL Trust delivered six anti-racism / anti-sectarianism educational events with grass roots football clubs across Scotland.
The main aim of this initiative was to create educational opportunities for young people, which highlight the dangers of racism and sectarianism in football and society.
The events comprised of:
· Activities to encourage discussion, promote debate and challenge negative assumptions and stereotypes, which can lead to issues of intolerance.
· A fitness and football coaching session with SRtRC ex-professional players that encourage teamwork, supporting each other and equality and respect.
A total of 12 football teams participated in this initiative – two teams at each club / event, comprising of a range of boys and girls under12 to under17 teams. At each event there were also coaches present, as well as a selection of parent / guardians and on some occasion’s high profile guests (MSPs, Councillors).
All participants educated about the causes and consequences of racism and sectarianism and empowered to become active citizens, safely challenging racism and sectarianism in the communities in which they live.
