SRTRC Wales at the Swalec stadium addressing Welsh Labour Conference delegates
The Welsh Labour conference came to the capital city and our team were in attendance for a very busy weekend, our stall had plenty of visitors including Councillors, Union members, Ministers and Assembly Members all commending us on our continue success of combating racism across Wales.
Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones shared his views on racism in football during his visit to our stall and stated his disappointed at recent events, he acknowledged our hard work while praising our efforts towards eradicating racism.
We had plenty of resources on our stall and it was pleasing that so much of it had been picked up by the attendees and other stall holders. With the current issues of racism being so prominent, it wasn’t surprising that this was the main topic of conversation around our stall and this further built up the expectations towards our presence on main stage late in Saturday afternoon.
The Education Co-ordinator for Wales, Simon Richards presented on main stage and emphasised the importance of our work with young people, he recalled a positive outcome in relation to our intervention at a Cardiff school which had issues of racism and gave a personal account of his years as a teacher reflecting on the lack of anti-racism training that is still so evident in the schools.
A short clip of our recent work was then shown with the Chair of the Welsh campaign Sanjiv Vedi then completing our presentation, Sanjiv shared his own experiences of racism and reiterated the dangers of far right groups and how everyone must take responsibility towards combatting the re-emerging threat. From the reaction of the audience, it was very much evident that SRTRC had finally arrived as a leading charity in Wales fighting racism.
